There are many ways food can damage health. There are a number of things we do, and most times we don’t realize the negative impact it could have on our health. I believe that just knowing how to cook today is not enough; we also need to know a lot more about the foods we eat and how they can help us live a healthy life, or how certain habits of how we eat our food can contribute to our ill health. Much have been written about the nutrition value of some of the food we eat, but how about the way the food is cooked or presented for consumption. Here are 5 ways food could be damaging to our health.
Five Ways Food Can Damage Health
1. Preserved or processed foods
Preserved and processed foods are considered “empty foods” meant to mostly keep away starvation. Most of the natural goodness of food is depleted during the processing. When you eat preserved or processed food (and in other cases boiled foods) the nutrition value of the food is never at its optimum, and so preserved and processed foods can not ensure a healthy living. If your daily meals are mainly preserved or processed foods you could end up with an underfeed body in need of essential vitamins and minerals.
2. Hot and Cold Foods (Temperature)
Some nutrition specialists believe that hot foods can weaken the stomach muscle structure and interfere with the secretion of hydrochloric acids, which is produced in the stomach lining. Hydrochloric acid works to kill bacteria in the food and to soften it. It also helps provide the right condition for the enzyme pepsin to help in digestion of proteins. Cold foods is believed to constrict the mucous lining of the bowel, thus making it difficult for foods to be digested. So, if you have to drink an ice drink or eat ice cream, you should allow the food to be warmed in the mouth before you swallow. Also, allow hot foods to cool a little before eating or drinking.
3. Too much wheat
Wheat in the diet can be harmful to many people, especially celiacs. A high wheat diet is also high in gluten. Gluten can damage the intestinal villi and cause malabsorption in the bowel. This could then result in a calcium deficiency. Wheat has some benefits, it must be eaten in moderation as well.
4. Burnt foods
Burnt and greasy foods produce a lot of gas. Overcooked foods are a health threat because the organic compounds in them have undergone some structural changes under improper temperatures. These structural changes may also form carcinogens in the food which has shown, in a number of studies, to produce cancer in laboratory animals. You should be careful not to eat burnt toast or burnt barbecue meat. It is a serious risk.
5. Too much citrus fruits
In the Caribbean. we have an abundance of citrus fruits, however consuming an excess amount of it can mean too much ascorbic and citric acid, or too much acidity, in the stomach. The kidney therefore has to do more work. Variety is the key here. You can have a variety of juices and fruit juices, not just grapefruit or orange everyday. Also, remember that too much citrus fruit juices can cause boils and pimples. This is because the kidneys can’t take care of the excess juices. the skin and the kidneys in one moment. However, citrus fruit and its juices are useful in hot climates, a lot more than in cold climates.
