This recipe actually was a mistake, but a delicious one at that and now it has evolved to what I’m posting today, stuffed, herbed hops bread. It happened one day while my wife and I were in the kitchen busy as usual. She was kneading dough to make hops bread while I was making spring rolls. I didn’t feel like making the normal filling used for spring rolls so I was being innovative at it all the while. A dash of this, a smidgen of that, some chopped veggies and some grated cheese …You can’t forget the cheese.
An Idea is born
What happened next had me thinking on my feet quickly …When I went to the fridge to take out the spring roll skins, I saw mold and lots of it and had to throw away the whole pack of spring roll skins. There goes my spring rolls! I though about the wanton skins but the same thing happened to them as well and so I had to dump that too. Note to self : freeze spring roll and wanton skins from now on lol!! 🙂
So, now I had a bowl of filling and nothing to fill. By then the dough for the hops bread my wife was making had already raised and was ready for the oven. Instead of letting all that filling just go to waste I thought why not stuff the hops bread like a pocket. And, so the idea was born…After a few more tweaks, we came up with with our very own recipe for Stuffed, Herbed Hops Bread.
A Stuff, Herbed Hops Bread
The recipe doesn’t end here…I believe you can use anything to fill your hops bread. here are some ideas to start you in the right direction.
Variation for the filling
Make it vegetarian – Add veggies steamed or stir fried.
Make a herbed cheese filling – Similar to a cheese paste but without the butter. Add more herbs like parsley, garlic and chadon beni
Use seafood – Like steamed fish, shrimp or lobster.
Use meat only – Like geera pork, kielbasa, curry goat or chicken, even barbecue chicken.
The variations abound as far as the mind can reach. So, here’s stuffed herbed hops bread…Fill away! 🙂
P.S. It may look strange, but making the bread with the cake flour made it very soft and nice. Try it.
The Stuff, Herbed Hops Bread Recipe
6 cups cake flour
5 tbsp. lard
2 tsp. salt
2 cup water
2 pk yeast
2 tsp. dried parsley
2 tsp. basil
2 tsp. paprika
1 tomato (seeded and diced)
1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
1/2 sweet pepper, chopped
1 cup pineapple, chopped
1/2 cup grated carrots
1 pack turkey pastrami, sliced
1 tsp. chive
1 tsp. thyme
1/2 cup chopped onions
1/2 cup red onion
3 tbsp ketchup
1 tsp. soy sauce
1/2 tbsp. mustard
salt water to harden top
yield 20 stuffed hops bread
Note: the salt water hardens the top.
