But wait before you start you have to know a couple of things about bread making. Bread is made from four basic ingredients: flour, water, salt and yeast. The various textures and flavors arise when we add butter, egg, and other ingredients to the basic bread dough. Careful kneading is a must and the technique is easily learnt. Also, when the bread is hot from the oven you shouldn't cut it hot since the bread tends to "fall" but if you're like me there's always a work around. The trick is to cut it with a serrated knife.
When you are kneading the dough you must ensure that it is elastic. To do this you must work at the dough pulling and stretching the dough so it can develop the gluten and capture the air. This will help your dough rise properly. This is not a gentle process. No wonder they tell you to punch the dough lol!!..... The dough will rise best in a warm, moist, and draft-free area until it has sufficiently risen. Once the dough slowly springs back after you poke it with your finger, you can now shape it.
Whole-wheat Dinner Rolls Recipe
This recipe will yield soft rolls. However, nothing should stop you from making a loaf with this same recipe. It will come out just as well. These dinner rolls have some whole-wheat in them. I just like a little wheat in my rolls, but if you want plain dinner rolls you can substitute the wheat flour with white flour. Finally, this recipe is very simple. WHOLE-WHEAT DINNER ROLLS
In a deep bowl, mix the yeast and sugar.
In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in water and sugar. Set aside for 10 minutes.
Melt the butter and salt.
Beat the egg.
In another bowl mix the butter, salt and egg.
Add to the yeast and mix well.
Pour in the flour.
Mix in the flour with a fork.
Then knead into a soft smooth ball by hand.
While you knead you may rub your hands with a little oil.
Note: This will ensure that you do not add too much flour to the dough. Rub a little oil or melted butter over the dough, cover and and leave to rise until it doubles in size. Kneading a yeast dough involves you pulling and stretching the dough to help the gluten develop and get air into the dough.
When the dough is double in size, punch down. Yeast dough rises best in a warm, moist, draft-free area.
Note: Ideally, you can fill a heat-proof bowl with boiling water and let it stand while you prepare the dough. Then throw out the water and dry the bowl and place the dough in the bowl to be rise
Roll out the dough and cut out small squares. Roll in the palm and form small buns and place on a greased baking sheet.
You may brush it with some melted butter or egg white.
Allow to rise double it size. Then bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees F or until golden brown.
Cool before serving.

- 2 ¾ cups flour
- ¼ cup wholewheat flour
- 1 egg
- 1 oz yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 3 tbsp. sugar
- 3 tbsp. butter
- 1 tsp. salt
- In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in water and sugar. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- Add the butter, salt and egg. Mix in the flour. Knead into a soft smooth ball. While you knead you may rub your hands with a little oil.
- Rub a little oil or melted butter over the dough. Cover and allow to rise until double in size.
- Punch down and shape into buns. Place in a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees F or until golden brown. Cool before serving.
