Christmas is really here and by the sight of all the sorrel being sold at the market and also at the roadside on the highway it only means one thing: sorrel, sorrel and more sorrel to drink. But, what about other recipes using sorrel? In the past I have done a sorrel jam, sorrel cake and even a sorrel chicken recipe, but this year I decided to go one step further again and do some more recipes using red sorrel.
By the way recently, I saw a really dark red sorrel almost black. It’s not so sour as the regular red sorrel, but makes a really nice sorrel drink as well. Have to look for some more
Now, this sorrel sauce is a delight; it has a tart taste that makes it perfect to serve with almost any kind of grilled and baked meat. I have been envisioning a baked turkey with some sorrel sauce or even a grilled pork with some sorrel sauce maybe modified a bit for a kind of barbecue finish but that’s just me being creative. Will have to write down that idea….Here is sorrel sauce trinistyle. Enjoy!
1 lb sorrel sepals washed an dried
1/3 c water
2 c granulated sugar
1 sm piece cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground allspice
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tsp orange zest
Note: This sauce is a bit thick for some people. If you want the sauce a little thinner just add water to your liking.
Hope you like this simple sorrel sauce recipe.
