It is a challenge budgeting for the food you eat. It is hard to shake old habits, and even harder to buy the food that is considered healthy. On an average the typical family spends one third of their income on food. The typical family finds that that the ability to satisfy their material needs vary positively with their income level. Therefore, the cost of the meal is a good reason to budget. It is a relief to know that there is not really a connection between the nutritive value of food and the cost of food.



There are therefore a number of things every family should be aware of. Firstly, families should know what affects the cost of the food they buy. There are a number of factors, and they are: the price of labour, transportation, packaging, and price of raw materials and resources. Secondly, the family should have a good idea of the calorie or fuel needs of its members. In this way, the budgeting takes into consideration the activity levels of the members and at the same time ensure a balance in meals on a daily basis. Care prevents one day of overfeeding and another day of starvation. Thirdly, families should know what is considered a healthy diet.


What is considered a healthy diet? The basic health plan and diet has not changed for decades. Generally, all the health books and experts reiterate the following points:


  1. Watch how much you eat,
  2. Focus on the major food groups,
  3. Stay physically active, and
  4. Eat lots of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Therefore, health experts remind us to focus on variety, balance, moderation, nutrient density, and energy density. In other words, you don’t have to eat the same “ole thing day in and day out”. This is the key to ensuring a healthy diet and a sound financial budgeting plan.

Therefore, everyone should be familiar with the food pyramid. The revised one is interesting. The food pyramid is a good guide in planning meals, and not overeating. The new food pyramid emphasizes exercise which should become part of one’s daily activities. It also shows that the consumption of oils and fats should be kept low.
